The cooling system is one of the most important points that must be implemented in an electric vehicle.
The cooling system represents the way by which the correct operation of the battery is guaranteed, and its useful life is maximized. To do this, it is necessary to decide which type of cooling is the most appropriate: it can be air cooling or liquid cooling, looking for the compromise between cost and efficiency.
The heart of an electric vehicle is its traction battery. It is just as important to correctly define the type of cell, as it is to properly design the cooling system that must keep each cell within its operating temperature range.
A traction battery consists of a set of Lithium-Ion batteries inside an enclosure (usually made of aluminum alloy). These batteries or cells are responsible for generating the intensity of discharge necessary to power the vehicle’s electric traction motors. But they are only able to supply energy efficiently and safely when they are within a certain temperature range.
Temperature influences battery charge.
It is necessary that the recharging process is carried out within a specific temperature range to achieve an efficient charge and that it does not cause damage to the vehicle’s battery.
Therefore, the objective of a cooling system is to keep the battery pack (each of its cells) within its determined operating temperature range, in charge and discharge.
