IATF 16949 is the quality management systems (QMS) standard specific to the automotive industry, based on the international QMS standard, ISO 9001.
The objective of IATF 16949 is the development of a QMS that provides continuous improvement, emphasizing the prevention of errors and the reduction of variation and waste in the automotive supply chain.
IaTF members include major vehicle manufacturers (Volkswagen, PSA, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motors, GM, FIAT).
The IATF 16949 standard has become an essential requirement for any organization working in the global automotive manufacturing supply chain. Many, if not all, of the world’s leading automakers make it a prerequisite for their suppliers. That is, it is vital for any company within the automotive industry to be certified with such a standard.
The IATF monitors all its suppliers to meet a number of requirements: it keeps track of compliance with the common rules of the standard, conducts audits, applies new policies, and makes recommendations for improvement for companies, among many other things.
This standard provides organizations with a series of conditions that distinguish them from non-certified companies:
- Internationally agreed and recognized practices for quality management in the automotive sector.
- Common language for dealing with business customers and suppliers worldwide.
- Increased effectiveness and efficiency.
- Model of continuous improvement and quality.
- Model for delivering excellence to customers and other stakeholders.
