The association that represents the sector of manufacturers of components for the automotive industry estimates that this year the sector will create 1,380 direct jobs in Spain, which is an increase compared to 2018. Currently, the vehicle components industry employs 230,100 people directly in the country and 372,800 including indirect jobs.
The growth comes despite the fact that the engine is at a time of production adjustments due to the fall of the market in Europe, promoted by the uncertainty of where mobility will advance, the slowdown in China, the trade tensions derived from the tariff war and Brexit.
Despite this, the automotive components sector increased its turnover last year by 2.6%, to 37,170 million euros; while exports rose by 7%, reaching a new record of 21,415 million. Component manufacturers allocated 4.2% of their turnover in 2018 to R&D, a total of €1,545 million.
Although vehicle production has declined overall, the Volkswagen Group has been spared this decline.
Production at the Volkswagen Navarra factory expects to increase its production by 50,000 units compared to last year. The production of the Volkswagen T-Cross pushes production and allows the company to make a record in production at the plant.
On the other hand, the Spanish VW firm, Seat, expects to exceed half a million units produced at its Martorell plant this year. In 2018, 474,000 cars were manufactured. The good running of the Arona and Ibiza line, which operates every day in three shifts, including weekends and is expected to manufacture also in summer, makes sales expectations very high.
At ILPEA Galvarplast Automotive we have increased jobs and industrial activity in the three main automotive component manufacturing plants compared to the same month in 2018. And the fact that 40% of our activity is for the VW Group, means that we can also foresee that this trend to increase jobs will continue over the next few years.
